Acacia’s Anuj Malik gave a presentation at Cisco Live 2025 Amsterdam that discussed how coherent pluggable technology has emerged as a pivotal solution, integrating coherent optics into pluggable transceivers. This presentation gave a deep dive into the technical underpinnings of coherent pluggable technology, including key components such as tunable lasers, high-speed ADC/DACs, and sophisticated DSP algorithms. It also explored the performance metrics, such as data rates, reach, and power consumption, comparing them with traditional coherent solutions. Furthermore, the session highlighted real-world deployment scenarios, case studies, and future trends, underscoring the transformative impact of coherent pluggables leading to convergence of IP and Optical layers.

OFC Workshop: Coherent Technology for Intra-Datacenter Applications https://acacia-inc.com/acacia-resources/ofc-workshop-coherent-technology-for-intra-datacenter-applications/ Fri, 18 Mar 2022 01:51:25 +0000 https://acacia-inc.com/resource/ofc-workshop-coherent-technology-for-intra-datacenter-applications/ Ethernet speeds continue to climb up to serve the bandwidth needs by hyperscale data centers. Today, IM/DD has been extensively used in intra-data center interconnects for its lower cost/power and simplicity while coherent technology has been widely used in metro data center interconnects for its higher capacity/l and capability to compensate various link impairments. With the recent advances in DSP and photonic integration, the complexity and power consumption of coherent systems have been decreasing rapidly. As the data rate moves from 100G/l to 200G/l and beyond, the question arises as to whether IM/DD can continue to scale or migration of coherent technology into intra-data center networks is inevitable.

Mark Heimbuch shares his view on IM/DD vs. coherent detection for intra data center applications.

OFC Market Watch: The Road Ahead for Pluggable Coherent Optics https://acacia-inc.com/acacia-resources/ofc-market-watch-the-road-ahead-for-pluggable-coherent-optics/ Fri, 18 Mar 2022 01:44:35 +0000 https://acacia-inc.com/resource/ofc-market-watch-the-road-ahead-for-pluggable-coherent-optics/ The ever-expanding traffic growth across the internet requires continued innovation in network device design and the transceivers that connect them to enable a more robust and efficient network for intraconnect and interconnect applications. As the industry copes with multiple device and architecture design types, the evolution of the coherent transceiver design requires additional debate. Anuj Malik explores the path pluggable coherent transceivers design will take over the next three to five years.

ECOC 2021 Marketing Focus: Next Steps in Coherent Interface Standardization https://acacia-inc.com/acacia-resources/ecoc-2021-marketing-focus-next-steps-in-coherent-interface-standardization/ Fri, 17 Sep 2021 22:23:00 +0000 https://acacia-inc.com/resource/ecoc-2021-marketing-focus-next-steps-in-coherent-interface-standardization/ Standardization of coherent technology has taken a big step forward at 400G supporting applications in DCI and service provider networks. Looking toward the next generation, there are opportunities to increase speeds and expand the application space to address both shorter and longer reach interfaces using pluggable coherent optics. Meanwhile, silicon photonics is fast becoming the preferred material for high-speed coherent interfaces. The presentation will analyze how these trends are expected to influence next generation networks and investment in coherent technology.

Optinet 2020: Coherent Solutions Evolving Towards Edge and Access Applications https://acacia-inc.com/acacia-resources/optinet-2020-coherent-solutions-evolving-towards-edge-and-access-applications/ Thu, 27 Aug 2020 20:56:09 +0000 https://acacia-inc.com/resource/optinet-2020-coherent-solutions-evolving-towards-edge-and-access-applications/ We believe coherent technology for fiber optical communications has reached a tipping point with a new generation of pluggable modules based on 7nm CMOS technology. Much progress has been made over the past decade to reduce the size, power, and cost of coherent solutions which has enabled its evolution from long-haul to metro networks.

More recently, requirements from data center network operators for a high-capacity, high-density, pluggable solutions in QSFP-DD form factors widely used for client-optics slots have driven industry-wide investments into ultra-compact, low-power, economical coherent solutions that can be manufactured in high volumes.

This opens up new addressable markets for coherent solutions in the Edge and Access networks including 5G wireless and cable that can provide scalable, and operationally flexible solutions to address service providers’ growing bandwidth demands.

ECOC 2019: Next Generation Coherent Beyond Transport Networks https://acacia-inc.com/acacia-resources/ecoc-2019-next-generation-coherent-beyond-transport-networks/ Wed, 16 Oct 2019 17:12:15 +0000 https://acacia-inc.com/resource/ecoc-2019-next-generation-coherent-beyond-transport-networks/ After initial adoption in long-haul transport applications, use of coherent technology has consistently progressed toward shorter reaches. Multi-haul solutions addressing network applications ranging from edge to submarine are available today, while standardized coherent interfaces in pluggable form factors are expected to drive wider adoption of coherent in even shorter reach applications.

At higher data rates, “coherent grey optics” will compete with direct detect in non-DWDM applications inside data centers. What are the advances necessary for widespread deployment of coherent in these high-volume applications and how will this impact future network architectures and development roadmaps?
